What's Ticking

Spotted: John Mayer on Hot Ones

Published on May 10, 2018

For those of us afflicted with this wonderful hobby, an unavoidable pastime is to check the wrists of those around you. Whether standing in line at the grocery store or scanning the wrists of fellow travelers as you board the plane (a personal favorite), we innately want to seek out fellow watch geeks. This pastime also extends beyond physical and into the digital when celebrities appear in interviews or movies.

Those of you familiar with YouTube (everyone, I assume), when not catching up on the latest installment from TGV, you may have seen a series which seems to be trending as of recently called Hot Ones. In it, celebrities are interviewed while eating progressively hotter wings. In Hot One’s latest episode, self-proclaimed WIS, John Mayer, was recently a guest. Donning his wrist for the occasion appears to be a Rolex “Rainbow” Daytona in white gold.

Mr. Mayer’s example is most likely reference 116599RBOW from 2012.

The 40 mm case and the accompanying bracelet is comprised of 18k white gold and set with 44 jewels. 36 baguette-cut sapphires in a range of graduated colors adorn the bezel, giving it the “Rainbow” nickname. “Rainbow” Daytona, at the time of production, was incredibly time-consuming and expensive to produce. It was difficult for Rolex to obtain stones that fulfilled their rigorous standards in quality; finding incredibly well-matched and beautiful gems is no easy feat. Due to Rolex’s high standards, very few Rainbow Daytonas were produced, and the model is now discontinued. In 2018, the “Rainbow” Daytona was rebooted in Rolex’s Everose gold.
